We refer to children in play-group, pre nursery, nursery and reception as early years. Our emphasis here is to expand their skills already learnt with stimulating challenges: they are introduced to more creative play; this is the exploration stage. Teachers assigned for the two year old student group will be trained to incorporate appropriate literature, educational materials, music, and other specially selected materials and resources, all with the goal of enhancing the rapid changes that occur in a child’s brain development in the earliest stages of life.
Studies have found that learning improves when children are engaged in enjoyable and meaningful activities. That’s why at the reception class we introduce a more structured environment of planned free choice learning in which we assess the individual student’s needs, abilities and interest, thereby carefully designing educational activities that will bring out the child’s natural curiosity and encourage a lifelong joy in learning.
The curriculum in the early years is based on a medley of the best of Nigerian curriculum, British Early years Foundation stage curriculum (EYFS), American curriculum and the Montessori curriculum which provide a framework for the education of the children from birth to 5 years old. The areas covered are personal, social and emotional development(PSED), communication and language(CL) Physical Development(PD), Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive arts and Design. We encourage children to have a choice of different activities matched to their identified next steps of learning, both using indoor and outdoor opportunities. We are committed to facilitating active learning opportunities within the stunning Early Years classrooms and making the most of the facilities available on the main school compound.
